Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, Bollywood's beloved duo, known for their iconic collaborations in films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, share a deep off-screen connection. They even exchange insights on their craft. In a recent reflection, Kajol recalled a moment when SRK advised her to enhance her acting technique, a suggestion she disregarded. However, as time passed, she experienced burnout and reached a juncture where she contemplated leaving the world of acting and the film industry altogether.
Having embarked on her acting journey in 1992, Kajol swiftly honed her skills, reaching a remarkable level of proficiency by 1994. Reflecting on her growth, she revealed, "I reached a point in my career where I was performing unconsciously. I was doing everything instinctively... I would say, 'Do this as well, deliver this dialogue too,' and everything flowed effortlessly from within me," Kajol candidly shared during an interview with Humans of Cinema.
During that period, Shah Rukh Khan offered Kajol advice on learning acting techniques, which she disregarded at the time. Kajol recollected the conversation, saying, "I distinctly remember discussing this with Shah Rukh. He suggested, 'Perhaps you should learn this acting technique.' I responded, 'Is there really such a thing?'" she chuckled. He insisted, 'Yes, people are taught this technique because you can't rely solely on your instincts.' However, I didn't give it much thought back then."
However, there came a point in Kajol's career where she felt exhausted from portraying intense roles that demanded a lot from her on-screen. The acclaimed actress, who is set to make her digital debut in the Disney Plus Hotstar show, The Trial, shared her experience, saying, "After doing a film called Udhar Ki Zindagi (1994), I reached a stage where I felt completely disillusioned with the film industry and acting itself. I was completely burnt out and no longer wanted to continue doing movies. I confided in my mother, expressing my desire to take a break from the realm of meaningful cinema, the tears and emotions, and the heavy roles.
I no longer wished to pursue those types of roles. Instead, I wanted to be a typical 'three scenes and four songs' kind of actor with fewer scenes. Consequently, I signed up for three films that offered such roles, and they provided me with a sense of relief."
In the meantime, Kajol expressed her realization, stating, "I also learned the significance of embracing acting techniques. I came to understand that I didn't have to pour all of myself into a role and that I could simply act, knowing that I possessed the skill for it."
