Mumbai-born Sunil Gavaskar, fondly known as
"Sunny" and "Little Master," undoubtedly stands tall among
the greatest cricketers to have represented India. The former captain, who
etched his name in cricketing history with exceptional performances against
formidable opponents, turned 74 on Monday.
Gavaskar's career, spanning from 1971 to 1987, witnessed a
multitude of batting records being shattered, and new milestones set, on some
of the most challenging playing surfaces.
Beginning his journey in the cricketing arena on the dusty
pitches of Mumbai, Gavaskar exhibited his proficiency on both bouncy Caribbean
tracks and turning subcontinental wickets.
As a key member of India's victorious 1983 World Cup
squad, he held the record for the most centuries in Test matches for a
significant period. With over 10,000 runs in Test cricket, Gavaskar bid
farewell to the game with an impressive tally of 34 centuries and 45
half-centuries.
What better way to celebrate the 74th birthday of this cricketing legend than to relive some of his greatest innings and enduring records, some of which remain unchallenged even today?
● In March 1987, Gavaskar became the first cricketer to amass 10,000 Test runs—an extraordinary milestone that seemed unimaginable at the time. The 'Little Master' retired with a staggering total of 10,122 runs, a number that stands out significantly, especially considering the treacherous pitches he conquered against bowlers of the caliber of Michael Holding, Andy Roberts, Joel Garner, Jeff Thomson, and Denis Lillee.
● Gavaskar's record of the most Test
centuries stood unbroken for a considerable duration. Representing India in 125
Test matches, he scored 34 centuries. Many deemed this record insurmountable
until 'Master Blaster' Sachin Tendulkar surpassed it in 2005.
● Facing the fearsome West Indies,
Gavaskar amassed 13 centuries in the 27 Tests he played against them. The West
Indian team of the 70s and 80s was known for its formidable bowling attack, but
Gavaskar thrived on crossing batting milestones against some of the world's
most feared fast bowlers.
● After a challenging start to his Test career, Gavaskar failed to reach a century in his next eight Tests against England. However, he silenced all doubts when he struck a splendid 101 in India's first innings during the 1974 Test tour of England. He followed it up with a half-century in the second innings, although India couldn't avoid defeat in the match.
● Gavaskar displayed remarkable
composure even in the face of the intimidating West Indian pace quartet
comprising Holding, Marshall, Roberts, and Garner. In his debut series against
the West Indies in 1971, he accumulated 774 runs and registered a double century
as well.
● One of his most remarkable innings
came in the final Test of that series, where he scored a century and a double
century. Gavaskar's magnificent knock of 220 in India's second innings, with
only one other batsman managing a score above 50, sealed a draw and India's
historic first Test series win in the Caribbean.
● Aside from his batting exploits,
Gavaskar proved to be a sharp fielder and an influential leader. As the first
Indian fielder (excluding wicketkeepers) to claim 100 catches in Test cricket,
he left an indelible mark on the field as well.
As Sunil Gavaskar celebrates his 74th birthday, his
achievements, memorable innings, and records continue to inspire generations of
cricket enthusiasts. His impact on Indian cricket is immeasurable, and his
place among the legends of the game is unquestionable.
