Manipur’s Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, has disclosed that the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, has expressed serious concerns about the changing nature of violence in the state.
Singh stated that Shah is particularly worried about the violence and civil unrest shifting from peripheral areas to districts within the Imphal valley.
Biren Singh, who recently returned from a visit to New Delhi, held discussions with Shah regarding the evolving situation in Manipur.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the joint efforts of the state and central governments in controlling the violence to a significant extent. Singh also submitted a comprehensive report outlining the measures taken by the state government to restore peace and normalcy.
During their meeting, Amit Shah raised several issues, including attacks on the residences of Union Minister RK Ranjan Singh and state minister Sushindro Meitei, as well as the ongoing destruction of government properties, impeding the movement of security forces.
Biren Singh emphasized the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders, such as civil bodies, MLAs, and political leaders, to address the challenges collectively.
He also reassured that the central government, as assured by Shah, would take all necessary steps to restore peace in Manipur.
The meeting between Amit Shah and Biren Singh took place after an all-party meeting convened by the Home Minister in New Delhi to discuss the Manipur situation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been closely monitoring the state’s violence and providing guidance to find a resolution.
In a separate incident, unidentified miscreants set a shop on fire in Imphal West district, contributing to the ongoing violence in the region.
It is worth mentioning that the clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities have resulted in the loss of more than 100 lives. The tensions initially arose in May following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ protesting the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
The Meiteis, who make up the majority of Manipur’s population in the Imphal Valley, are distinct from the Nagas and Kukis who reside in the hill districts and are classified as tribes.
