Mumbai Braces for More Rain as Police Urge Residents to Stay Indoors, IMD Issues Alerts

Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall Friday morning, prompting police to advise residents to stay indoors. The IMD issued an orange alert for Mumbai and a red alert for Raigad and Ratnagiri. Emergency teams are on high alert as officials brace for more intense rain across the city and surrounding districts.

Heavy rainfall lashed Mumbai on Friday morning, prompting the city police to issue an advisory urging residents to stay indoors and avoid coastal areas unless absolutely necessary. The advisory, shared on social media, also urged citizens to exercise caution while driving and to contact emergency services at 100 if needed.

“Mumbai Police officials and staff are on high alert and ready to assist,” the statement read, as rain continued to disrupt daily life across multiple neighbourhoods.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane, forecasting further intense showers through the day. Palghar has been placed under a yellow alert, signalling the possibility of moderate weather conditions but advising residents to stay aware.

In neighbouring districts, the situation appears more severe. A red alert has been declared for Raigad and Ratnagiri, warning of “heavy to very heavy rainfall” at some locations and “extremely heavy rainfall” in isolated pockets. The ghat regions of Satara and Pune are also under red alert due to expected intense downpours.

The IMD uses a colour-coded alert system to guide public response to weather events. A red alert signals the need for immediate action, typically issued when weather conditions pose a serious threat. An orange alert advises preparedness for potentially hazardous situations, while yellow indicates a watchful stance with minimal disruption.
