Cybersecurity at 'Friends of BRICS' Summit

National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval participated in the 'Friends of BRICS' meeting held in Johannesburg, South Africa, with a major focus on addressing cybersecurity concerns.

The gathering brought together representatives not only from BRICS nations but also from other countries considered as 'Friends of BRICS' - Belarus, Burundi, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kazakhstan, and Cuba. The primary agenda was to collectively tackle the emerging challenges posed by cybersecurity threats.

In the discussions, Doval highlighted the critical nature of dealing with cyber risks, especially in light of disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), Big Data, and the Internet of Things (IoT) that are rapidly advancing. The meeting also shed light on the concerning nexus between cybercriminals and terrorists, who exploit the digital realm for various illicit activities including financing, money laundering, radicalization, lone-wolf attacks, recruitment, and secure communication.

A particular concern raised by Doval was the susceptibility of the younger generation to extremist ideologies propagated through social media platforms. Given their familiarity with technology and impressionable minds, they become vulnerable to falling prey to such indoctrination, posing potential security challenges.

Emphasising India's commitment to the cause, Doval assured that the country will take the lead in overcoming resource limitations and work closely with other nations in the Global South to effectively tackle cybersecurity challenges. The 'Friends of BRICS' meeting served as an essential platform for fostering international cooperation in the face of evolving cyber threats.
