PM Modi firmly asserts no changes to the Constitution amid BJP leaders' controversial remarks on revisiting provisions, accusing opposition of stoking fears over caste reservations during high-stakes election campaign.

New Delhi, 22nd April 2024 - In the midst of the heated argument on the suggestion of certain BJP leaders over the replacement of some portions of the Constitution with new ones, Prime Minister Narendra Modi firmly denies any changes to our nation's guiding document.

In a recent rally in Barmer, Rajasthan last week, Modi allegedly said, "The government's priority is the Constitution of the country, and even if Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar himself comes out of his grave, he cannot break the Constitution."

The Prime Minister's comments arrive after several BJP leaders, like former Karnataka minister Anant Kumar Hegde and Faizabad candidate Lalu Singh, have asserted that some constitutional provisions could be re-evaluated, prompting discrimination concerns among the communities listed in caste-based reservations.

On Sunday, during yet another rally in Rajasthan, Modi criticized the Congress party for spreading these fears and reiterated that the opposition tried to portray the BJP as a party that would change the existing reservation rule for SCs and STs in government jobs and educational institutions, should it be voted to power again.

To the Opposition, the BJP is the guilty party, and the unconstitutional remarks were a result of their actions. As for the party's manifesto, Pawan Khera, one of the Congress leaders, defended it, saying that it promoted justice in different societies.

While damage control is attempted by BJP's Rajya Sabha member Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, who oversees the election campaign in Rajasthan, a message has been sent to the party workers to remain vigilant and combat the "negative forces" by propagating a "positive message" based on the development agenda.

The ruling party has accused the "enemies of India" within and outside the country and other external factors of plotting against the government. This has led to Modi's strong foreign policy decisions.

With such a heated general election battle going on, the BJP and opposition parties are exchanging blame, and the recent controversy with the prime minister's comments on the issue of minority rights over the resources of the country is also attracting sharp criticism from the opposition parties.

The constitutional crisis has been sprinkled over the already boiling political soup in which every party is trying to fortify the support forces in the bid to assure their crucial electoral victory.
