Pakistan Creates Drone Menace in Punjab :-

Ever since the news of Khalistan sympathizer Amritpal Singh showing up in Punjab has been doing rounds, central agencies have been questioning whether his appearance is in any way linked to the excessive increase in the movement of drones from Pakistan into Punjab. These drones are accused of bringing drugs into Punjab and worsening the existing drug problem, with the highest number of drone movements being recorded in the year 2022.

Leap in Drone Movements

Around 256 drone movements were detected by the Border Security Force, last year, in Punjab out of which 90 per cent were found to be inside Indian territory as reported by News18. Data indicates that the sharp rise in such movements is noteworthy since the BSF, which tackles drone menace, recorded only 67 such movements in the year 2012. A similar rise has also been noted in the Jammu border, where a three-fold increase has been sighted as compared to last year.

This upsurge has been connected to the return of Amritpal Singh from Dubai to India after almost a decade. Singh's connection to Pakistan-based cross-border drug dealers like Billa, Bilal, and Rana among others has been established. Using local criminals and villagers as bait, these dealers are smuggling drugs into India, sources have stated. To disrupt the law and order in Punjab, Pakistan has been pumping in contraband through Singh who has been accused of locally managing the supplies. The BSF records highlight the highest number of drone movements in Gurdaspur, Ferozpur, and Amritsar.

Last year, the BSF DG commented on this rise in the number of drones, stating, “The BSF has been at the receiving end of the drone menace for quite some time. The versatility of the drone, which is very well known, has been posing problems for us with nefarious elements having found new uses of the drone due to its anonymity and quick flight at sufficient height bypassing the frontiers”.
