The prices of paneer and badam mix touch are witnessing a high surge after Aavin – a brand of the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation – increased the prices of its products in Chennai and the surrounding suburbs.
The hike in the prices has been officially announced through a notification by the Federation and will be applicable with immediate effect. The Federation's price hike on paneer across various weight categories will be implemented from Tuesday.
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin addressed a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah in late May since Shah also holds a cooperation portfolio. The letter sought "urgent intervention" regarding the issue of Amul's milk procurement activities within the milk shed area of Aavin in the state.
CM Stalin expressed his concerns over the misuse of the multi-state cooperative licence by the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union, commonly known as Amul, to establish chilling centres and a processing plant in Krishnagiri District.
Additionally, Amul had plans to procure milk from Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and Self Help Groups (SHGs) operating in and around several districts, including Krishnagiri, Vellore, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Tirupathur, Ranipet, and Dharmapuri.
The Chief Minister pointed out that it has always been a customary practice in India to allow cooperatives to flourish without encroaching upon each other's milk shed areas. He argued that such cross-procurement activities by Amul contradicted the spirit of 'Operation White Flood,' which aims to support and strengthen the cooperative milk sector.
