During his landmark visit to Nigeria, PM Modi reaffirmed the high priority India places on its strategic partnership with the country, citing economic ties, cultural connections, and recent global developments like the African Union’s inclusion in the G20. The visit marks a milestone in over six decades of bilateral relations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the significance of India’s relationship with Nigeria during his visit to Abuja on Sunday, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the African nation in 17 years. The trip is the first leg of PM Modi’s three-nation tour, which will also include Brazil and Guyana.
In a bilateral meeting with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, PM Modi stated, “We give high priority to our strategic partnership with Nigeria. I am confident that a new chapter in our ties will begin following our talks.” He also announced the dispatch of 20 tonnes of relief supplies to assist flood-affected regions in Nigeria.
PM Modi acknowledged the 60,000-strong Indian expatriate community in Nigeria, the largest in West Africa, describing them as a “key pillar” of the relationship. He also highlighted the inclusion of the African Union in the G20 as a permanent member during the G20 summit in New Delhi in 2023, calling it a “significant outcome” for strengthening Africa’s global presence.
India and Nigeria’s diplomatic ties date back to 1958, two years before Nigeria gained independence. The relationship was elevated to a strategic partnership during then-Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s visit in 2007. Today, over 200 Indian companies operate in Nigeria, with investments totaling $27 billion across manufacturing and other sectors, making them the second-largest employers in the country after the federal government.
