PM Modi's Visit to South Africa

Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is departing for South Africa to attend the 15th BRICS Summit, having received an invitation from the country's president, Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa.

The BRICS summit, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, will convene from August 22 to 24. On August 23, Modi will engage in the plenary sessions, including a closed one that will address intra-BRICS matters, multilateral system reform, and counter-terrorism.

On August 24, he will take part in a special event called "BRICS – Africa Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue," hosted post-summit and involving other nations invited by South Africa. These sessions will center around the concerns and priorities of the Global South, with a strong emphasis on fostering partnerships with Africa.

Prime Minister Modi will make his third visit to South Africa on this occasion, marking the 30th anniversary of India's diplomatic ties with South Africa. South Africa currently holds the presidency for this year's BRICS summit, which is themed as "BRICS and Africa: Fostering mutual growth, sustainable development, and inclusive multilateralism." Importantly, this summit signifies the return to in-person meetings after three years of virtual gatherings due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
