PM Modi's Visit to South Africa to Attend 15th BRICS Summit Starts Today

Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is departing for South Africa to attend the 15th BRICS Summit, having received an invitation from the country's president, Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa.
The BRICS summit, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, will convene from August 22 to 24. On August 23, Modi will engage in the plenary sessions, including a closed one that will address intra-BRICS matters, multilateral system reform, and counter-terrorism.
On August 24, he will take part in a special event called "BRICS – Africa Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue," hosted post-summit and involving other nations invited by South Africa. These sessions will center around the concerns and priorities of the Global South, with a strong emphasis on fostering partnerships with Africa.
Prime Minister Modi will make his third visit to South Africa on this occasion, marking the 30th anniversary of India's diplomatic ties with South Africa. South Africa currently holds the presidency for this year's BRICS summit, which is themed as "BRICS and Africa: Fostering mutual growth, sustainable development, and inclusive multilateralism." Importantly, this summit signifies the return to in-person meetings after three years of virtual gatherings due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Vinay Kwatra provided trip details, noting that an Indian business delegation will join PM Modi at the 15th BRICS Summit in South Africa. They'll participate in various meetings, including those of the BRICS Business Council, BRICS Women Business Alliance, and the BRICS Business Forum.
Kwatra mentioned that PM Modi's bilateral meeting schedule in South Africa is still being finalized.
During his South Africa visit, PM Modi will participate in a post-BRICS Summit event called "BRICS Africa Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue," involving other invited nations, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs. He'll also hold bilateral meetings in Johannesburg.
Russian President Putin will virtually attend the BRICS Summit, represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Lavrov will also take part in a special event with the theme "Brics Africa outreach and Brics plus dialogue," which includes many African countries invited by South Africa.
After the PM's engagement in Johannesburg, he will visit Greece on 25h August at Greece PM's invitation.
The Indian diaspora in South Africa is eagerly waiting for their home country's Prime Minister. Harbinder Singh Sethi, Director of South Africa's first Gurdwara Saheb, welcomes PM Modi's visit for the 15th BRICS Summit, anticipating enhanced India-South Africa relations. He hopes PM Modi will encourage major Indian companies to invest in Africa, creating jobs for locals and fostering mutual growth.
Sanju Tripathi, an Ayurveda business enthusiast in South Africa, eagerly awaits PM Modi's visit for the 15th BRICS Summit. They hope PM Modi will promote Ayurveda within BRICS nations and encourage experts to visit South Africa for awareness. Tripathi also requests a direct flight connection between India and South Africa.
