PM Modi to visit Russia and Austria from July 8-10, 2024. Discussions will focus on Ukraine war, energy security, and technological cooperation. Private meetings with Putin and Nehammer planned. Visit aims to strengthen India's diplomatic and economic ties amid global tensions.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning for a major three-nation diplomatic tour to Moscow and Vienna; the major issues of concern would be the Ukraine war and energy crisis. The planned visit is for July 8-10, 2024, and the forecasts and situations in the global markets and security remain still unsteady due to the Ukraine crisis.
The Prime Minister of India will have a private dinner with the Russian President Vladimir Putin at the residence of the latter on July 8 in Moscow. It is believed that the meeting will discuss the progress of India’s energy cooperation with Russia as European consumers shift to costlier sources from West Asia owing to the war. He will also consider different types of energy pipeline corridors among them being the Arctic while the two parties will be considering whether India would be interested in investing more in Russias energy sector.
First, the war in Ukraine will be discussed as one of the central topics of discussion. Returning from the G-7 summit in Italy, Modi will be able to relay the intentions of Western leaders to Putin, urging for the resumption of peace talks. The Indian Prime Minister is one of the few leaders of the world who still have a very warm and friendly conversation with Putin, which suggests that any conversation between them could be rather productive and to the point.
Other fields of cooperation to be discussed are space activity, where India can count on Russian support for Gaganyaan mission and further space station-project. Nuclear energy cooperation is also on the table; India intends to operate more units at the Kudankulam facility.
After this, PM Modi will be in Vienna on 9th of July for a private meeting with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer. It is the first time an Indian Prime Minister pays an official visit to Austria since Jawaharlal Nehru in 1983. They expect that the talks will be focused on clean and green technologies, and the service of the Austria in the Indian infrastructure projects.
During his visit to both Moscow and Vienna, Modi will try to understand how India could assist these countries to address the issue of Ukraine conflict as its effects have not only been severe on the economies of developed countries but also on the developing ones.
