Amidst a backdrop of opposition, Prashant Kishor, the renowned election strategist-turned-activist, has thrown his weight behind the 'One Nation, One Election' initiative put forth by the Narendra Modi-led Central government.

Kishor's endorsement underscores the potential benefits of this move for India, provided it is implemented with sincere intentions and a carefully planned transition period spanning 4-5 years.

As per a video shared by ANI, Kishor highlighted the historical precedent of simultaneous elections for both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, which occurred for the first 18 years following India's independence until 1967.

‘’In a country as expansive as India, around 25% of the nation participates in elections every year, resulting in a perpetual cycle of electoral activity. If this is limited to 1-2 times, it will be better. This will cut down expenses and people will have to make a decision only once”, he added.

Nevertheless, Kishor emphasised the need for a gradual transition, cautioning against an abrupt shift and suggesting that a well-structured government bill is essential.

His support for the 'One Nation, One Election' concept comes at a time when various opposition parties, including the Congress, vehemently oppose the idea.

Rahul Gandhi, a prominent Congress leader, has criticised the proposal, describing it as an attack on the unity of India and its states.

Meanwhile, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, another Congress leader, declined to participate in a committee established by the law ministry, citing concerns about its predetermined outcomes. The fate of this contentious proposal now hinges on the government's intentions and the ongoing debate within India's political arena.
