Uttar Pradesh's freshly appointed Congress chief, Ajay Rai, on Friday affirmed that Rahul Gandhi will indeed contest from the Amethi constituency in the upcoming elections.

This statement follows Rai's appointment as the head of the state Congress unit. Rai's assurance adds a new layer of certainty to the party's electoral strategies in the crucial state.

Addressing speculations about Priyanka Gandhi's electoral participation, Rai declared that the party is flexible about her choice of constituency.

‘’If she wishes to challenge PM Modi directly in Varanasi, Rai emphasized that every Congress worker will rally to ensure her triumph,’’ he added.

The statement comes amidst hints from Priyanka's husband, Robert Vadra, suggesting her readiness for a parliamentary role.

The history of the Gandhis' electoral ventures was also revisited in light of these announcements. In 2019, Rahul Gandhi took a dual approach by contesting from both Amethi and Wayanad, marking his entry into South Indian politics.

Loss in Amethi to Smriti Irani was a stunning upset

The loss in Amethi to Smriti Irani was a stunning upset, while his triumph in Wayanad secured his place in the Lok Sabha. His eligibility for the 2024 elections was questioned after his conviction in the 2019 Modi surname case, which led to a temporary loss of his Lok Sabha membership. However, his standing was restored when the Supreme Court issued an interim stay on his conviction.

Ajay Rai's elevation to the UP Congress presidency brings a fresh perspective to the party's strategies in the state. Rai didn't shy away from questioning Smriti Irani's electoral promises, particularly her commitment to making sugar available at ₹13 per kilo. He emphasized that the public deserves answers about the unfulfilled promise.
