Rahul Gandhi has been summoned to a special court in Pune on October 23, 2024, over a defamation case filed by Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The charges relate to remarks Gandhi made during a 2023 speech in London, which were deemed defamatory. A police investigation has found merit in the complaint, leading to court proceedings under section 500 of the IPC.
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has been summoned by a special court in Pune on October 23, 2024, in connection with a defamation case. The case was filed by Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
The defamation charges stem from a speech Gandhi made in London in March 2023, where he allegedly stated that V D Savarkar had written about participating in violent actions against a Muslim man. Satyaki Savarkar has claimed that these allegations are false, baseless, and defamatory, with no historical or written evidence to support such an incident.
Following a police investigation by Vishrambaug police station, the court found prima facie merit in the complaint, leading to the issuance of a summons to Gandhi under section 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The case was recently transferred to a special court for MPs and MLAs from the judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) court, and the hearing will take place later this month.
