Renowned Indian Statistician Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao Passes Away at 102

Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, a distinguished figure in the field of statistics in India, breathed his last at 102 on Wednesday. 

Rao's groundbreaking contributions spanned various disciplines, revolutionising fields like economics, medicine, and anthropology. His unparalleled work earned him the esteemed 2023 International Prize in Statistics, akin to the Nobel Prize in his domain.

Rao's impact reverberated across diverse subjects, including business, anthropology, and economics. 

His profound work encompassed estimation theory, differential geometry, and multivariate analysis. His influence was not confined to academia alone; it extended to crucial institutions like the Central Statistics Office, the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), and the CR Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (AIMSCS) in Hyderabad, established in 2013.

During his illustrious seven-decade career, Rao mentored approximately 51 doctoral students, many of whom have become luminaries in their respective fields. Among them, the quartet of KR Parthasarathy, R Ranga Rao, VS Varadarajan, and SRS Varadhan stands out. SRS Varadhan clinched the prestigious Abel Prize in 2007 for his notable contributions to large deviations.

Rao's mathematical prowess surfaced as early as 6. His autobiography, "Glimpses of India's Statistical Heritage" (1992, Wiley Eastern Limited), edited by JK Ghosh, SK Mitra, and KR Parthasarathy, is a testament to his journey. Born in a Telugu family in Huvinahadagali, Karnataka, he was the eighth child among ten siblings. He pursued his education in various towns across Andhra Pradesh. He also achieved a Ph.D. from King's College, Cambridge University, and a DSc from the same institution in 1965.
