The northeastern Indian state of Manipur is currently experiencing ethnic violence, which has prompted the state governor to issue shoot-at-sight orders and the government to shut down all internet services. Mobs have been attacking houses, shops, and religious places while also targeting a lawmaker in the state capital of Imphal.

The violence is believed to have been sparked by a proposal to grant scheduled tribe status to the majority Meitei community, which has caused tribal Kuki groups to call for protests.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the government is monitoring the situation and state officials have been asked to make arrangement to air-lift students.

The government of Meghalaya has responded to the ongoing situation by devising a plan to evacuate more than 200 students currently studying in Manipur.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma chaired an emergency meeting to discuss the matter and assured the students and their parents that they are in touch and making arrangements for their evacuation.

A helpline number has also been established for students and parents to call on a 24-hour basis if they require any assistance.

Despite the violence, Sangma has emphasized that there is no need to panic and the situation is being monitored. The Meghalaya government is in touch with the Manipur government and is working towards finding a resolution to the conflict. The safety and well-being of the students are their top priority, and they are taking all necessary steps to ensure their safe return.

The situation in Manipur highlights the ongoing issue of ethnic tensions in India, which have often led to violent clashes and unrest. Governments at all levels need to work towards finding a peaceful solution that takes into account the needs and concerns of all communities involved. In this case, the proposal to grant scheduled tribe status to the Meitei community has caused resentment among tribal Kuki groups, who fear that it will lead to a loss of their own identity and culture.

It is vital to address these concerns and ensure that any decisions made do not come at the expense of one community over another.

The use of shoot-at-sight orders and shutting down internet services is a concerning development, as it restricts the ability of individuals to communicate and access information, which is crucial during times of unrest. It is essential to balance the need for security with the right to free speech and access to information.

In situations like this, the government needs to maintain transparency and provide regular updates to the public to avoid misinformation and rumors that can exacerbate tensions.
