Sukanta Majumdar, BJP’s West Bengal president, was arrested while trying to visit Beldanga after recent communal violence. Police cited legal measures to prevent further disruption, while BJP leaders condemned the action as politically motivated.
West Bengal BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar was arrested on Wednesday by police in Nadia district as he attempted to visit violence-hit Beldanga in Murshidabad. Authorities cited Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) for his preventive detention, aimed at avoiding potential disruption to the region's fragile peace following recent communal clashes.
Majumdar’s convoy was stopped by police in Krishnanagar, leading to a sit-in protest by the BJP leader, who accused authorities of obstructing his fact-finding mission. "Our party workers have put up road blockades elsewhere to protest police action," he stated.
Prohibitory orders had been imposed in Beldanga after clashes between two communities on Saturday night over an objectionable message displayed at a Kartik Puja gate. The violence left at least 17 people injured and caused property damage, prompting the suspension of internet services.

Police justified the arrest, emphasizing that Majumdar’s visit could have exacerbated tensions. The BJP, however, criticized the move as a violation of democratic rights.
