Senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Pramila Mallik on Friday scripted history after she was elected as the new Speaker of Odisha Legislative Assembly unopposed.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik along with the President of the BJD put forward Pramila Mallik's name as the nominee for the position on Wednesday.

"I am very happy on being elected as Speaker, I would like to thank Chief Minister and Party President Naveen Patnaik who has always been at the forefront of women empowerment on social as well as political front,” Mallik told ANI.

The female Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) belonging to the Biju Janta Dal conveyed their congratulations to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

They also offered their heartfelt thanks for his role in the election of Pramila Mallik as the first female Speaker of Odisha.


Senior Biju Janta Dal leader Debi Mishra remarked, "Naveen Patnaik has always been ahead in setting an example to take women empowerment on priority, Biju

Janata Dal is the first party which gave 33 per cent tickets to women in the 2019 Loksabha election and the first party to make 50 per cent reservation for women in local elected bodies."


The Biju Janta Dal proudly expressed in a statemnet, "Biju Janta Dal is the first party to make more than 70 per cent women Zila Parishad presidents. Odisha is the state with the highest representation of women in parliament."


They added, "Pramila Bisoyi the eldest Member of Parliament is from BJD and

Chandrani Murmu was elected as MP at the age of 25 (in 2019) is from BJD."

Pramila Mallik's political journey has been marked by her consistent success as a six-time MLA representing the Binjharpur Assembly Constituency.

Her career began in 1990 when she was initially elected as an MLA from the Janta

Dal ticket. She continued to secure her seat in 2000, this time as a member of the Biju Janta Dal.

Over the years, she has played pivotal roles in Naveen Patnaik's BJD government, serving as a Cabinet Minister and also holding the position of Chief Whip for the party in the state assembly.
