Union Minister Smriti Irani mocked Congress's indecision over Amethi candidate, taking digs at Rahul Gandhi and Robert Vadra's hints about contesting from the constituency.
Union Minister Smriti Irani blasted at the Congress party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Robert Vadra before the crowd in Amethi yesterday. As the rumors about whom the Congress will choose as its Amethi candidate for the Lok Sabha election are circulating, Irani added fuel to the fire of the party's confusion.
"It looks like the times when people used to leave a handkerchief on the bus seat so that no one else takes it, as I mentioned," she said. "Rahul Gandhi is also supposed to travel here and drop his handkerchief in the seat to check if the seat is already marked by his brother-in-law who is aspiring to win this seat."
Rahul Gandhi lost to Irani from Amethi, the place where, historically, the Congress has enjoyed a stronghold, in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. She maintained that she had advanced the district to more developmental projects in five years of her leadership than Gandhi achieved in 15 years.
"Dekho jija ka nazar hai, kya karenge sahab. (Brother-in-law is eyeing the seat, what will he (Mr. Gandhi) do?)," she snorted.

In the last few weeks, Robert Vadra, the husband of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has gradually and steadily been fueling the rumour mills about his intention to contest from Amethi. He opined that the locals are behind him and will make sure that if he run he will be the overwhelming and clear winner.
"Believe me or not? There are just 27 days left for the election, but the Congress has not announced its candidate yet. What audacity!" she said, pointing at the top leadership of the Congress.
Amethi, which is the fifth phase of the election, will go to polls on 20th of May. The grey area around the constituency seems to have provided the additional weapons for Irani to carry on hurling insults at her political rivals as the political battle day by day becomes more intense and thrilling.
