Within a period of 24 hours two different terrorist attacks took place in Jammu and Kashmir in which one soldier was killed and another was injured. The occurrences demonstrate that the security threats in the region have not ceased.

On Wednesday, July 24, 2024, a joint operation by the Indian Army and J&K Police in Kupwara’s Kowut area resulted in an encounter with terrorists. The operation which was conducted days ago after receiving information of the presence of terrorists led to the killing of one terrorist and wounding of a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO). The Army said that the troops confronted acts of suspicion and the terrorists started firing aimlessly. It is still an ongoing operation and the search continues in the region.

The day before that, on Tuesday, July 23, the Army had foiled an infiltration bid in the Poonch district along the Line of Control. The ferocious exchange of gunfire claimed the life of Lance Naik Subash Kumar. His remains were taken to the Army after an autopsy with the White Knight Corps acknowledging his ultimate sacrifice.

These incidents raise questions on a possible resumption of militancy in the Jammu region given the recent surge in terrorist activities in the area. The two successive incidents bring out the fact that the security forces continue to face threats in the region of Jammu and Kashmir.
