A tragic accident unfolded off Egypt’s Red Sea coast on Thursday as a tourist submarine sank near the popular resort city of Hurghada, resulting in the deaths of six people and injuries to 19 others. The incident involved the tourist vessel “SINDBAD,” which had departed for a routine coral reef sightseeing tour around 10 a.m. local time.

State media reported that all six deceased were foreign nationals, although their identities and nationalities have not yet been officially confirmed. The Russian consulate in Hurghada stated that 45 Russian tourists were onboard the submarine, alongside crew members, and claimed that four of the deceased may have been Russian citizens.

According to early reports, 29 of the passengers were successfully rescued and transported to hospitals for treatment. Most of them are reportedly in stable condition. The submarine sank approximately one kilometre from the shoreline, prompting immediate rescue operations from local authorities and emergency responders.

The cause of the sinking is still under investigation. Egyptian officials have launched a probe to determine whether technical failures or human error were responsible for the incident. The governor’s office in the Red Sea region confirmed the event but withheld further details pending the outcome of the inquiry.

Hurghada, situated roughly 460 kilometres southeast of Cairo, is a well-known tourist hotspot, drawing thousands each year to its coral-rich Red Sea waters. The incident has raised fresh concerns over safety measures in Egypt’s marine tourism sector, particularly after a similar yacht accident last November that claimed four lives.

With investigations underway, authorities are focusing on identifying accountability and ensuring future safety protocols for tourist vessels operating in the region.
