Rescuers in Nepal recovered the first body after a landslide swept two buses into the Trishuli River, leaving over 50 passengers missing. Search efforts continue as authorities grapple with monsoon-related challenges. Seven Indian nationals are among the missing.
As if to make the situation even worse, the first casualty has been retrieved from the debris in the Nepal disaster that saw two buses being swept away by a calamitous landslide on Friday into the Trishuli River. The accident which took place near the district of Dolakha, around 120 kilometers west of Kathmandu has claimed over 50 passengers’ lives some of them being Indian passengers.
According to the government administrator, Khima Nanda Bhusal, the body of a man was recovered 50 kilometers down from the scene of the disaster. It therefore serves as a wakeup call to the rescue teams, regarding the trials that they go through in the process of searching.
The buses were on a key arterial road heading to the southern parts of the country from the capital when the tragedy struck at Simaltal. The river called Trishuli became dangerous with the monsoon currents in full force and the water had become a muddy brown colour making it difficult for the rescuers to look for the bodies.
To the luck of luck three passengers were able to abandon the buses and got minor injuries before the occurrence of the landslide. They are now admitted at a hospital near our home.
On Saturday, with better weather conditions prevailing, the efforts to search for the lost people were amplified. Many rescuers from Nepal army, police teams and other teams are using rubber rafts, divers and sensor equipments in their effort to search for the sunken vehicles and people who could not be recovered.
The event is a pointer to the effects of the Monsoon season in Nepal which is from June to September. This weather condition is characterized by heavy rainfall that causes landslide along the steep slopes of the Himalayan mountainous regions; a perilous situation to any traveler.
Such hazards call for certain measures taken by the Nepali government, which include the restrictions of passenger bus travel at night in areas with warning of a weather event.
