President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his support for the H-1B visa programme, advocating for skilled professionals across various industries. While promoting global talent, Trump’s new executive order ending birthright citizenship has sparked debate, particularly among H-1B visa holders affected by the policy change.
In a recent White House press conference, US President Donald Trump expressed his support for the H-1B visa programme, emphasising the need for competent professionals across diverse industries. Trump stated that the visa is vital for bringing high-quality talent into the United States, benefiting both tech and non-tech sectors.
“I like both sides of the argument, but I also like very competent people coming into our country,” Trump remarked. He highlighted that the programme serves not only the technology sector but also other fields, citing roles such as maître d', wine experts, and high-quality waiters as examples.
Trump’s comments came during an event alongside Oracle CTO Larry Ellison, Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. He underscored the importance of skilled workers in driving innovation and economic growth.
While acknowledging differing opinions on the H-1B visa, Trump stressed that expanding opportunities for skilled workers benefits the broader economy. “By doing that, we’re expanding businesses, and that takes care of everybody,” he added.
However, the president’s stance on immigration policies has drawn attention. Alongside his support for skilled workers, Trump recently signed an executive order eliminating birthright citizenship for children born to non-citizen parents in the US. This decision directly impacts H-1B visa holders, as their children born in the country after February 20 will no longer automatically receive American citizenship.

The H-1B visa debate continues to divide opinion within Trump’s support base. Advocates, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, see it as essential for attracting global talent, while critics argue it undermines job opportunities for American citizens.
