Donald Trump urged Saudi Arabia and OPEC to lower oil prices, claiming it could end the Russia-Ukraine war immediately. Speaking at Davos, he criticised high oil costs and linked them to the conflict’s continuation. Trump also advocated global interest rate cuts and emphasised his support for peaceful resolutions.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Saudi Arabia and other OPEC nations to reduce oil prices, asserting that this move could immediately end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Speaking virtually at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump expressed surprise that this action wasn’t taken before his presidency.

Trump linked high oil prices to the continuation of the conflict, arguing that reduced costs would weaken Russia’s financial ability to sustain the war. He also held OPEC nations partially responsible for the situation, stating, “They should have lowered prices long ago. Millions of lives could have been saved.”

In addition to addressing oil prices, Trump advocated for a reduction in global interest rates, citing their economic impact. He reiterated his longstanding admiration for the Russian people and acknowledged his past positive rapport with President Vladimir Putin. Trump also highlighted Russia’s historical sacrifices during World War II, positioning his stance as supportive of peace rather than punitive toward Russia.

The conflict, which began in January 2022, has claimed over 14,000 civilian lives and displaced millions. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine followed tensions over NATO’s expansion into eastern Europe. While Russia demands NATO’s withdrawal from the region, Ukraine continues to resist Russian aggression with Western support.

Trump’s remarks have reignited debates on the role of energy economics in geopolitics and whether reducing oil prices could indeed play a decisive role in resolving the war.
