After Thursday’s voting, the UK general election saw a dramatic change in British politics – the Labour Party, headed by Keir Starmer, has emerged victorious. Labour secured 412 seats in the lower house of parliament, known as the House of Commons, thus bringing an end to the Conservatives’ rule that had lasted for 14 years and introducing a new political era in the UK.

Starmer has succeeded in achieving that feat as the new leader of the Labor party, and the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi was among the first to congratulate him. In a tweet, Modi exhibited his enthusiasm to engage with the new UK government and mentioned, “I look forward to our further positive and constructive partnership and looks forward to taking forward India-UK CSP to new heights to achieve mutual development in all aspects.

In the election the Brexit party emerged as the winner with the Conservative Party of the outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak receiving the worst defeat in the party’s history. This crushing defeat has been blamed on such factors as the austerity measure commonly referred to as the cost-of-living crisis, internal party problems and anti-Party sentiments from the voters due to the poor performance of the party in the recent past.

The leader of the Labour party, Sir Keir Starmer, in his victory speech, stated that he and his party will be concerned with the idea of ‘national renewal,’ and this will entail returning to public service while promising to be fair. ‘Our task is nothing less than to refresh the ideas that sustain this country,’ said Starmer in a speech and vowed to give an equal opportunity to those who wanted to work hard and follow the rules of the game.

Of course, at the same time congratulating the new administration, Prime Minister Modi had a chance to express his gratitude to the outgoing Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak. Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended Sunak for his stewardship of Britain and said that he worked hard to deepen the India-UK relationship.

And so, as the UK makes this tremendous political shift, the rest of the world will be watching. The alteration of power is expected to introduce new dynamics into the domestic and foreign policies of Britain, thus the relation with main partners, such as India, may be affected.

It is clear that the British voters have decided to change the government and that is why the Labour Party has such a victory. As Keir Starmer gets ready to assume the position of the next Prime minister, he is now poised to deliver the change and to solve the problems which voters in the entire United Kingdom have been having.
