Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has nominated Rustem Umerov as the new Defence Minister, dismissing Oleksii Reznikov, during the ongoing 19th month of the war with Russia. Zelenskyy cited the need for "new approaches" in the ministry as the reason for the change. Since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war on February 24, 2022, Reznikov has gained prominence, with the conflict claiming numerous lives and ongoing escalations between the two nations.

Zelenskyy announced the nomination of Rustem Umerov, a former people's deputy of Ukraine, as the new Defense Minister in a video shared on his social media account X.

Zelensky emphasized the crucial need to eradicate corruption throughout Ukraine's government, which he believed was vital for Kyiv's prospects of securing NATO and European Union membership. During his presidential campaign, Zelensky placed a strong emphasis on addressing internal scandals.
