Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has
nominated Rustem Umerov as the new Defence Minister, dismissing Oleksii
Reznikov, during the ongoing 19th month of the war with Russia. Zelenskyy cited
the need for "new approaches" in the ministry as the reason for the
change. Since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war on February 24, 2022,
Reznikov has gained prominence, with the conflict claiming numerous lives and
ongoing escalations between the two nations.
Zelenskyy announced the nomination of Rustem Umerov, a former people's deputy of Ukraine, as the new Defense Minister in a video shared on his social media account X.
Despite Reznikov not being directly involved in Ukraine's Ministry of Defence corruption scandals, his association with them had a damaging effect on his reputation. Zelensky emphasized the crucial need to eradicate corruption throughout Ukraine's government, which he believed was vital for Kyiv's prospects of securing NATO and European Union membership. During his presidential campaign, Zelensky placed a strong emphasis on addressing internal scandals.
In a recent development, Ihor Kolomoisky, a
prominent Ukrainian oligarch and a key supporter of Zelensky, was arrested as
part of a fraud investigation. A Kyiv court ordered Kolomoisky to be held in
pre-trial detention for 60 days while authorities continue to investigate the
fraud charges against him. Kolomoisky's significant involvement in media and
banking businesses has made him one of Ukraine's wealthiest individuals.
