Pakistan’s potential withdrawal from
the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 is causing uncertainty surrounding the
much-anticipated match against India. The tournament’s schedule has been
announced, revealing that Pakistan will play across five venues in India.
However, the government’s formation
of a committee to discuss the participation of Babar Azam and his team has
raised doubts about their involvement in the ODI World Cup, set to begin on
October 5.
Ehsaan Mazari, Pakistan’s Sports
Minister, stated that unless India agrees to play the Asia Cup in Pakistan, the
Pakistani team will not travel to India. The Asia Cup was previously arranged
as a hybrid model after India declined to visit Pakistan, resulting in Pakistan
hosting only four matches, while Sri Lanka would host nine.
Uncertainty looms over Pakistan’s participation in ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as controversy arises over venue and India-Pakistan relations.
Mazari argued that Pakistan, as the
original host, should have the right to hold all matches within the country and
opposed the hybrid model.
Mazari further insisted that if India
demands neutral venues for their Asia Cup matches, the same should apply to
Pakistan’s World Cup games in India. He criticized India for introducing
politics into sports and dismissed their security concerns, citing successful
tours by New Zealand, England, and Australia, where presidential-level security
was provided.
Uncertainty Surrounds Uncertainity in Pakistan's Participation in ICC Cricket World Cup 2023
To evaluate Pakistan’s participation
in the ODI World Cup, a committee of ministers, led by Foreign Minister Bilawal
Bhutto Zardari, was formed by PM Shehbaz Sharif. The committee will discuss the
matter and present recommendations to the Prime Minister, who holds the final
decision as the patron-in-chief of the Pakistan Cricket Board.
The forthcoming meeting of the
International Cricket Council (ICC) in South Africa, which will be attended by
Zaka Ashraf, the PCB’s new chairperson, and BCCI secretary Jay Shah, is
expected to address the issue of World Cup participation. All eyes are on the
outcome of these discussions, as it could have a significant impact on the
highly anticipated India-Pakistan match.
