Amid the ongoing monsoon session of the Lok Sabha, the newly-elected Member of Parliament (MP) from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Sushil Kumar Rinku, was suspended due to his alleged unruly behavior.
The suspension, announced by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, came after Rinku threw papers at the Chair while discussing the Delhi Ordinance Bill, 2023.
This suspension marked the second incident within the AAP, as Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh was also barred from the remainder of the session due to disruptions over the Manipur violence issue.
The suspension resolution was brought forth by Union parliamentary affairs minister Prahlad Joshi and received approval from the House. Speaker Om Birla expressed his attempts to maintain decorum in the House, but Rinku's actions diminished the dignity of the parliamentary proceedings.
Under Rule 374 of the Lok Sabha, the Speaker can name a member who obstructs the House's rules and authority of the Chair during proceedings. However, the suspension cannot extend beyond the current session, and the suspended member must immediately withdraw from the House precincts.
Sushil Kumar Rinku had recently won a by-election for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency, securing victory over his closest rival from the Congress party.
Post-suspension, the AAP MP used the opportunity to voice his party's opposition to the Delhi Ordinance Bill, which was passed in the Lok Sabha during the same session.
The suspension of the only AAP MP in the Lok Sabha and the disruption caused by AAP MP Sanjay Singh in the Rajya Sabha highlights the need for maintaining decorum and adhering to parliamentary rules during sessions.
As the monsoon session continues, the focus now shifts to constructive discussions and decision-making within the Parliament.
