According to Hindu mythology, Katyayani was born as a result of the collective energy of the gods, which they generated to defeat the demon Mahishasura. She is said to have manifested from the anger of Goddess Parvati and taken the form of a warrior goddess to vanquish the demon.

The name Katyayani is derived from the name of the sage, Katyayan, who was instrumental in her creation. It is believed that the sage performed intense penance to please Goddess Durga, who then took birth as his daughter, Katyayani.

They then create a sacred altar or puja mandap and place a picture or idol of the goddess on it. The altar is decorated with flowers, leaves, and other offerings, including fruits, sweets, and betel leaves.


The worship is performed by offering flowers, chanting mantras, and reciting hymns dedicated to the goddess. Devotees also light incense sticks and offer them to the goddess as a symbol of purification and devotion.
