The legal age for a woman's marriage is 18 years and husbands who marry younger females would be punished with life imprisonment. Besides, the appropriate age for motherhood is 22 years to 30 years and Himanta Biswa Sarma insisted that women should not wait too long to become mothers since it leads to complications.   Child Marriages Child Marriages-Child Marriages As per the statistics, 31% of marriages in the state are in the restricted age category. Therefore, Assam government has taken an initiative to lower the state's high infant and maternal mortality rate, the major cause of which is child marriage.  "God formed our bodies in such a way that there is an appropriate age for everything", for that reason, women should not wait too long for accepting motherhood, Biswa Sarma added.
