BJP leader and Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the general public and advised that women should accept motherhood at the appropriate age otherwise it may lead to medical problems.

In an effort to implement stringent rules against underage motherhood and induce Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, Assam Chief Minister embraced his government's commitment to end child marriages and asserted that thousands of men will be imprisoned in the next five to six months for maintaining sexual relations with a girl under the age of 14. The legal age for a woman's marriage is 18 years and husbands who marry younger females would be punished with life imprisonment. Besides, the appropriate age for motherhood is 22 years to 30 years and Himanta Biswa Sarma insisted that women should not wait too long to become mothers since it leads to complications.   Child Marriages Child Marriages-Child Marriages As per the statistics, 31% of marriages in the state are in the restricted age category. Therefore, Assam government has taken an initiative to lower the state's high infant and maternal mortality rate, the major cause of which is child marriage.  "God formed our bodies in such a way that there is an appropriate age for everything", for that reason, women should not wait too long for accepting motherhood, Biswa Sarma added.

The Assam government has decided to penalize men who marry girls under the age of 14 under the POCSO Act. Henceforth, those who marry girls between the ages of 14 and 18 will face prosecution under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act of 2006 and may lead to life imprisonment.
