Mumbai witnessed a devastating maritime accident on Wednesday as a Navy craft undergoing engine trials collided with a passenger ferry near Karanja, resulting in the loss of 13 lives. The collision, which occurred around 4 pm, involved the ferry Neel Kamal carrying passengers from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island.

The Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Police promptly responded, rescuing 99 passengers. Tragically, among the deceased were one Navy personnel and two representatives from the craft's Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). The victims included seven men, four women, and two children, Mumbai police confirmed.

First responders described the scene as chaotic and heart-wrenching. Arif Bamane, a driver of the Mumbai Port Trust boat Poorva, recounted the harrowing rescue efforts. "People were screaming for help, some were crying," he said. His team managed to revive a small girl through chest compressions, emphasizing their priority to save women and children.

Fishermen and tourist boat operators also played a crucial role. Veteran boat driver Iqbal Gothekar, who rescued 16 people, described the chaos as survivors frantically waved for help. "In my 20 years of experience, I’ve never seen anything so horrific," Gothekar stated.
