In a pivotal development, Delhi's Saket Court has issued a definitive verdict in the long-standing 2008 murder case of journalist Saumya Vishwanathan. The court's decision, rendered on Saturday, entails life imprisonment for all four accused involved in the heinous crime, namely Ravi Kapoor, Ajay Kumar, Baljeet Malik, and Amit Shukla. This culmination of legal proceedings follows the court's call for a pre-sentence report (PSR) on October 26, indicating the meticulous nature of the sentencing process.

The court assigned the principal secretary of the Delhi government the responsibility of designating a Probationary Officer (PO) for the crucial task of compiling and submitting the PSR. This step underscores the judicial commitment to ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the case's intricacies before determining the quantum of the sentence. The charges against the accused included murder and the operation of a crime syndicate under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) concerning Saumya Vishwanathan's tragic demise.

Beyond the four main culprits, another accused, Ajay Sethi, faced conviction on the grounds of benefiting from the proceeds of the crime. Saumya Vishwanathan, a journalist, met a tragic end on September 30, 2008, when she was fatally shot while commuting home from work in the early hours of the morning. Initial reports had suggested robbery as the motive behind the incident, a claim put forth by the police during the investigation.

The sentencing delivered by Additional Sessions Judge Pandey holds Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, Baljeet Malik, and Ajay Kumar alias Ajay accountable for life imprisonment. Additionally, a financial penalty of Rs 1 lakh 25 thousand has been imposed on each of the four accused, further underscoring the severity of the court's judgment. This verdict signifies the conclusion of a legal saga that began with the tragic events of 2008, ultimately providing closure and justice in the Saumya Vishwanathan case.
