4.8 Magnitude earthquake hits New York area: buildings and grounds flights shaken

Early on Friday morning, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake shook the New York City area, generating extensive shaking. As authorities evaluated any damage, the earthquake had an impact on trains and aircraft.

For the first
time in a long time, people reported feeling an earthquake
in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York City. The ground
shook and buildings began to tremble.
Shortly after, at Lebanon, New Jersey, some fifty miles away from New York City, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) detected an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8.

According to the
USGS, the earthquake was felt in surrounding states and peaked at a depth of
roughly 4.7 miles.
The residents
were informed about the earthquake and warned that aftershocks might occur
shortly. The earthquake was promptly followed by the sending of an emergency
alert.
Concurrent with the brief halt of arrivals at Teterboro Airport and La Guardia Airport, there was a ground stop for aircraft at John F. Kennedy Airport and Newark Libert International Airport.
