4 Army Jawans Killed in Doda Encounter

Four Indian Army soldiers killed in an encounter with terrorists in Doda, Jammu and Kashmir. The incident, part of a joint operation with local police, marks the second major attack in the Jammu region within a week.
In a tragic night yesterday, 4 Army soldiers including an officer were killed in action in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir. The encounter took place in Desa area, second big encounter in Jammu region in a week.
The operation was a joint one by Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police, was launched on specific intelligence about terrorist presence in the area. Contact was established with the terrorists around 9 pm and then heavy firing ensued.
Initially Army had reported injuries to their personnel, at least 5 soldiers were critically wounded. As the situation developed it was confirmed that 4 soldiers had been killed in action.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has spoken to Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi to get updates on the operation and ground situation in Doda.
This is after last week’s attack in Kathua where 5 soldiers were killed and 5 others injured in a coordinated attack on two military trucks. Use of armor piercing bullets and M4 rifles in that attack had raised concerns about the terrorists capabilities.
The Jammu region, once relatively free from terrorism, has seen an alarming increase in militant activities. Over the past 32 months, 48 soldiers have been killed in action in the area. Reports suggest that approximately 60 foreign terrorists, trained in jungle warfare, may be operating in the Jammu region alone.

Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the Army to deploy its full spectrum of anti-terrorist capabilities to eliminate terrorism in Jammu. As the shadow of fear spreads across all ten districts of the province, security forces face the challenging task of restoring peace and stability to the region.
