Aam Aadmi Party Extends Support To Uniform Civil Code

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced its backing for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). 

The party's organisational secretary, Sandeep Pathak, emphasized the need for consensus to be reached through discussions with various religious and political groups before implementing the proposed legislation. 

This announcement comes just a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi advocated for the UCC during an event in Madhya Pradesh.

The AAP has expressed ideological support for the Uniform Civil Code, citing Article 44, which also calls for its implementation. However, Pathak emphasized the party's belief that consensus should be achieved through dialogue with all concerned parties before moving forward with the UCC. 

In an exclusive interview with India Today, he stated, "The Aam Aadmi Party believes that consensus should be reached after discussions with all religions and political parties before implementing it."

While extending their support for the UCC, Pathak criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the central government. He accused the saffron party of bringing up complicated and complex issues whenever elections draw near. Pathak suggested that the BJP uses such contentious matters to create confusion and divisions in the country for political gains. 

He stated, "If Prime Minister Narendra Modi had done some work in the past nine years, he would have had the support of work. Since the prime minister doesn't have the support of work, he will seek the support of the UCC."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had emphasized the need for a Uniform Civil Code during his address in Bhopal. 

He also expressed concern that Muslims were being provoked and misled on this sensitive issue by opposition parties for their own political gains. The Prime Minister also highlighted that even the Supreme Court had advocated for a Uniform Civil Code, but parties engaged in vote bank politics were opposing it.

During his speech, Modi launched a scathing attack on the opposition parties, accusing them of being involved in corruption and terming their recent conclave in Patna as a mere "photo-op." 

He reaffirmed his party's commitment to refrain from appeasement and vote bank politics, stating that the BJP has decided against adopting such approaches.

The issue of the Uniform Civil Code pertains to a common law governing matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, maintenance, and succession of property for all citizens. While the Aam Aadmi Party's support is a significant development, the path to implementing the UCC will require further discussions and consensus-building among different stakeholders.
