On September 30, 2024, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh officially took command as the Chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF), succeeding Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, who retired after a distinguished three-year tenure in the role. At 59 years old, Singh brings over 5,000 hours of flying experience and a wealth of knowledge in military aviation.

Commissioned into the IAF in December 1984, Singh has established himself as a highly skilled fighter pilot and qualified flying instructor. He has been significantly involved in the Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA) program, which is expected to be pivotal in enhancing the IAF's combat capabilities in the upcoming years. His leadership comes at a critical juncture as the IAF modernizes its fleet with indigenous military hardware, aiming to improve operational efficiency.

The Air Force is currently navigating significant challenges, including a protracted military standoff with China in the Ladakh region and ongoing efforts towards theaterisation—an essential reform designed to optimize military resources for future conflicts. Singh's prior experience includes commanding an operational fighter squadron, overseeing a frontline airbase, and leading the MiG-29 upgrade project in Moscow.

Additionally, Singh has held prestigious positions such as Vice Chief of the Air Staff and Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Air Command. His extensive background in flight testing, particularly with the Tejas LCA Mk-1, positions him as a key player in the IAF’s ongoing evolution as it adapts to modern warfare requirements.
