Antim Panghal, a rising wrestling talent, won a bronze medal and a spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics for India in the women's 53 kg category at the World Wrestling Championships in Serbia. She defeated Emma Jonna Denise Malmgren, a two-time European Champion, with a score of 16-6 in the bronze medal match.
Antim's bronze medal is India's first at this year's tournament. Overall, India has won 23 medals in the World Championships, including one gold, five silver, and 17 bronze medals. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) shared the news about this victory by the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) athlete on social media (formerly Twitter).
In the World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade, Antim Panghal had a great performance. First, she made it to the Round of 16. Then, in a big surprise, she defeated last year's World Champion, Parris D, with a score of 3-2 in the 53kg category. In the Round of 16, she faced Roksana Marta Zasina from Poland and won with a score of 10-0, which is called a Victory by Technical Superiority (VSU), earning her a spot in the quarterfinals.
In her quarterfinal match, Antim Panghal beat Russia's Natalia Malysheva with a score of 9-6, winning by Points with Technical Points (VP01). Although she couldn't win her semifinal match against Vanesa Kaladzinskaya from Belarusia, she still had a chance at a bronze medal, which she went on to win.
