French authorities have received a software update from tech giant Apple for its iPhone 12 model aimed at resolving a radiation issue. This development follows France's recent suspension of iPhone 12 sales due to reported breaches of radiation exposure limits in tests conducted by the country's authorities.

Apple had initially contested the French findings, asserting that the iPhone 12 complied with international radiation standards. However, in response to the concerns raised, the company pledged on September 15th to release a software update tailored to accommodate the specific testing methods employed in France.

As of now, the software update is being evaluated by French authorities. Notably, this move by Paris to halt iPhone 12 sales had caused concern in other European nations, including Belgium, which also requested access to the software upgrade.

The Belgian industry regulator confirmed that the software update was limited to France and anticipated further European-level actions once French authorities shared the fix's details and its limited availability within the European Union.

While the French regulator Agence Nationale des Frequences and the Dutch digital watchdog have not yet commented on the matter, Italian authorities have decided to await the outcome of French deliberations before making any decisions.

The concerns in France were based on test results that differed from those conducted elsewhere, and industry experts have emphasized that regulatory limits are set well below levels where harm has been scientifically established.

Notably, China's government has recently banned officials from using foreign-branded phones, including iPhones, in government offices or for official work. It will be interesting to see how Apple puts up a fight in such stringent times with the recent release of the iPhone 15.
