On Monday, March 25,
the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) connected the strategically significant
Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road in Ladakh.
Along the Kargil-Leh Highway, this 298-kilometer road will connect Manali with Leh via Darcha and Nimmu.
Having previously connected the two regions through the Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh axes, this route now connects Ladakh to the hinterland.
Compared to the other two axes, the Nimmu-Padum-Darcha route is shorter and passes through just one pass, Shinkun La (16,558 feet), where the BRO intends to begin digging. This happens to be the fundamental reason for the strategic importance of the road.
This will ultimately guarantee that the road can travel to the Ladakh region regardless of the weather. The connection will promote more economic growth in the Zanskar valley and improve the capabilities of the defense industry.
The Director General of Border Roads, Lieutenant General Raghu Srinivasan, declared in January that the work of connecting the roads had been finished and that the required staff and equipment had been mobilized. At the time, the Zansakar River used to be frozen over.
He appeared confident in his assessment that work on the black-topping road would shortly begin.
