Assam Rifles Accused of Obstructing Police in Manipur Buffer Zone Dispute

Tensions have escalated in Manipur following allegations by the state's police force against the Assam Rifles for obstructing their vehicle and disrupting their operations.


The incident, which unfolded last week, resulted in the lodging of a First Information Report (FIR) against the Assam Rifles. The FIR claims that the paramilitary unit impeded police vehicles on the Kwakta Gothol road in Bishnupur district on August 5.

Tensions rise in Manipur as Assam Rifles accused of obstructing police vehicle; dispute centers on buffer zones.

As per police reports, the clash occurred during a subsequent search operation aimed at Kuki militants under the arms act. The police assert that personnel from the 9th battalion of Assam Rifles positioned their 'Casper' vehicle on the road, creating an obstruction and preventing police advancement along Pholjang Road. This sequence of events led to a confrontational encounter between the two parties.


As per a PTI report, defence sources claimed that the Assam Rifles' actions, highlighting a mission undertaken to safeguard the buffer zones separating the Kuki and Meitiei areas. 


“”These sources argue that the paramilitary unit was executing a directive from the command headquarters, entrusted with the task of upholding the integrity of these buffer zones ", the report added.


Manipur Buffer Zone Dispute
Tensions have escalated in Manipur following allegations by the state's police force against the Assam Rifles for obstructing their vehicle and disrupting their operations.

As per several media reports, it is being said that the Army is proactively liaising with the state government at a senior level to address the matter.
