Imran, 70, was wounded by a bullet to the right leg on Thursday while leading a protest march against the government in the Punjab province when Basheer opened fire on him.
According to a report in the media on Friday, police in Pakistan's Punjab province have detained two more suspects who they believe sold the pistol and bullets for PKR 20,000 to Naveed Mohammad Basheer, the attacker who attempted to assassinate former premier Imran Khan during a political rally.
Later, Basheer acknowledged that the reason for his attack on Imran was that "he was trying to mislead the public. Basheer allegedly opened fire from close range on the truck carrying Khan that was mounted with a container. Imran was transported by road to the Shaukat Khanum Medical Center in Lahore, where he underwent surgery and was declared stable afterward, according to his party.
According to police sources, Basheer was sold a gun and ammunition by Waqas and Sajid Butt for PKR 20,000, and the gun was unlicensed and unregistered, according to a report from Geo.tv.
According to the report, which cited police sources, they were taken into custody in Wazirabad, Punjab province. His party claimed that he is now secure, and he was also adamant about continuing his protest march.
A high-level joint investigation team (JIT) has been requested by Pakistan's Interior Ministry to be established in Punjab to gather information regarding an attempted assassination of Imran.
A coalition led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz governs the federal government while Imran's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is in power in Punjab province (PML-N).
The Punjab government has received a letter from the Interior Ministry regarding the matter, according to a statement released late on Thursday. In the communiqué, it was requested that the JIT consist of senior police officers and intelligence personnel.
Prior to that, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said the JIT should be composed of senior officers for a credible and open investigation into the incident during a press conference with Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb. He also guaranteed the provincial government the center's full cooperation with the investigation.
The minister also attributed the security lapse that may have contributed to the firing to the Punjab government. He blamed the provincial government as well for the unauthorized release of the assailant's confessional video. He criticized PTI leaders Shireen Mazari and Asad Umar for assigning responsibility for the incident to senior military and government figures without providing any supporting documentation.
Sanaullah denounced PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry for allegedly inciting people to attack opposition leaders' homes "You do not also reside in the sky. You will be consumed by the fire you start if you incite violence."
The minister confirmed that the PTI chairman was the target of threats to his life, but he also said that he was protected by impenetrable security measures. In the wake of the incident, he also counseled the PTI leader to alter his course of action.
He claimed that he had requested a report from the Punjab government, the chief secretary, and the inspector general of police on the prime minister's instructions.
Aurangzeb counseled the public and the media to refrain from making speculative claims and reckless statements. She strongly condemned the dismissal and wished Khan speedy recovery.
