On Sunday, a
bombing occurred during an election rally in Pakistan's border district of
Bajaur, leaving nearly 200 people injured. Al Jazeera reported that on Monday,
the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the Bajaur suicide blast in
Pakistan, which resulted in the death of 54 individuals, including 23 children
and more than 200 injured.
According to Al
Jazeera and the Islamic State group's news arm Amaq, a suicide attacker from
ISIL triggered an explosion by detonating his explosive jacket amidst a crowd
in the town of Khar. The incident occurred as approximately 400 members of the
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) party, a prominent government coalition partner
led by hardline politician Fazlur Rehman, were gathered, waiting for the
speeches to begin.
At 4:10 pm, the suicide bomber triggered an explosion using explosives while JUI-F members and supporters were assembled in the town of Khar, near the Afghanistan border. The convention had commenced at 2 pm, according to the official statement.
Shokat Abbas, the
additional inspector general for the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), stated
that approximately 10-12 kg of explosives were utilized in the blast.
The police have
filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the Counter Terrorism Department on
Monday, based on the initial investigation, which points to the terrorist group
ISIS being behind the suicide attack. The FIR has been registered by the KP CTD
against unidentified individuals on suspicion of terrorism, murder, attempted
murder, and other related offenses, as reported by Geo News.
Geo News reported that Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the head of the JUI-F, called on Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister, and Azam Khan, the interim chief minister of KP, to investigate the incident.
The US, Russia,
and Saudi Arabia condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the affected
families.
Extremist attacks
in Pakistan have risen since the truce between TTP (Tehreek-e-Taliban) and
Islamabad collapsed last year. A Peshawar mosque blast earlier this year
claimed over 100 lives, According to a UN Security Council report, TTP might
unite with Al Qaeda to form a single entity for militant organizations in South
Asia.
Pakistan holds
Afghanistan responsible for not stopping the use of its soil for terrorism
against Islamabad.
