Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated the
second phase of JP Ganga Path and the elevated portion of Lohia Path Chakra in
Patna on Monday. The extended JP Ganga Path now reaches Gai Ghat, covering
12.5km from Digha. During the inauguration, the CM also reviewed the progress
of the path's extension to Deedarganj and offered guidance to officials.
When asked about the quality of the country's healthcare facilities, Nitish Kumar said that the government plans to expand the Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) from its current 750 beds to 2,500 beds, following the example of the 5,000-bed Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH). The CM emphasised the importance of both organisations' long histories.
Kumar stressed that the land provided by his
administration in Shobhan is appropriate because of its four-lane road
connectivity, making it the perfect location for the projected All India
Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in Darbhanga. He said he was willing to
provide land and build roads so the development could proceed. The Centre,
however, has raised objections to the Shobhan location due to safety issues
associated with the area's low elevation.
Kumar admitted that the Darbhanga AIIMS project has slowed down because the Centre has refused to sanction the Shobhan location. He reaffirmed that the site will be appropriate after land filling and that it is connected to a four-lane road. He couldn't wrap his head around the Centre's new posture and complaints.
This comes at a time when the state government and
the Centre are engaged in a political struggle over where to put the AIIMS. The
state government of Bihar was recently accused by a BJP delegation of
politicising the AIIMS issue, which has resulted in delays. Although funding
for the 750-bed AIIMS in Darbhanga was granted by the Centre in the 2015-16
Budget, finding an appropriate site has proven difficult.
As the argument continues, Kumar's comments reflect
it by reiterating points already made by both sides: the viability of the
Shobhan location, and the government's commitment to easing the way for
infrastructure development. Developing hospital infrastructure is a crucial
area, and this argument highlights the difficulty of balancing administrative
decisions with political considerations.
