Heavy rains continue to affect Chennai and Bengaluru, with water-logging and disruptions in daily life. IMD has issued alerts for both cities, while political tensions rise in Tamil Nadu over flood mitigation efforts. The rain also delayed the India vs. New Zealand cricket match in Bengaluru.
Southern India is grappling with heavy rainfall, leading to widespread water-logging in Chennai and disruptions in Bengaluru. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for both cities on Saturday, October 19, with forecasts predicting more downpours throughout the week.
Chennai experienced intense rainfall, with several areas like Cholavaram and Red Hills receiving over 25 cm of rain. The city faced significant water-logging, and residents in low-lying areas have resorted to using boats to reach safer locations. An orange alert was also issued for multiple districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Villupuram, and Kancheepuram, as the downpour continues to pose a flood risk.
The main opposition in Tamil Nadu, AIADMK, criticized the MK Stalin-led DMK government, accusing it of failing to implement effective flood mitigation measures. However, Chief Minister Stalin dismissed these claims, stating that the government is prepared to handle the situation.
Meanwhile, Bengaluru, known for its sporadic weather, saw a foggy morning and consistent rainfall, with the IMD predicting the wet spell to last until October 24. The ongoing India vs. New Zealand cricket match was briefly disrupted due to rain but resumed later in the day.
