Bihar Restaurant Ordered to Pay Customer Rs 3,500 for Not Serving Sambar with Dosa

Buxar, Bihar - A restaurant in Buxar, Bihar has been ordered by a court to pay Rs 3,500 to a customer after it failed to serve sambar with its Special Masala Dosa, priced at Rs 140. The court ruled that the absence of sambar caused "mental, physical, and economic" distress to the customer.
It is customary in many places to serve sambar and chutney with dosas, making the absence of the accompanying dish a point of contention. The legal battle ensued when the dissatisfied customer took the matter to court, leading to the recent ruling and subsequent penalty for the restaurant.
The lawyer Manish Gupta was celebrating his birthday and ordered a special masala dosa worth Rs 140 packed and found out about the sambhar that generally served with dosa was missing.
Manish served a legal notice to the restaurant regarding the same with the district consumer commission.
A division bench of the consumer commission chairman after 11 months found the restaurant guilty and imposed a fine of Rs 3,500 and noted that Manish Gupta suffered mental, physical and economic. Also, the fine imposed in two parts as Rs 1500 as litigation cost and 2,000 as the basic fine.
