A protest against electricity department irregularities in Bihar's Katihar led to the loss of one life and left two others injured. The incident occurred when the police allegedly opened fire to disperse the mob that had gathered outside the electricity department.

The residents of a village near Barsoi town were voicing their discontent over the irregular supply of electricity and the higher power tariffs imposed on them. The situation escalated when the protesters resorted to pelting stones and vandalizing the electricity department's office. In an attempt to control the situation, the police first resorted to aerial firing, followed by a lathicharge and eventually opening fire to disperse the agitated crowd.

The unfortunate incident resulted in the death of a 35-year-old man identified as Mohammad Khurshid. Two others sustained grievous injuries, with one being referred to Siliguri in West Bengal for medical attention and the other undergoing treatment at Sadar Hospital in Katihar. Additionally, 12 officials from the electricity department were also injured during the violent encounter.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was swift in condemning the incident, with spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticizing the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government. Poonawalla went as far as likening Nitish Kumar to General Dyer, a British official infamous for his role in the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

The BJP leaders Vijay Sinha and Tarakishore Prasad also expressed their strong disapproval of the government's actions, drawing parallels to dictatorial regimes like Hitler's.

The situation has raised concerns about the handling of protests in Bihar, with opposition leaders accusing the government of using excessive force against its citizens, who are merely demanding their rights. The incident has sparked outrage and questions about the state of democracy in the region.

The District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police are currently present at the spot, overseeing the aftermath of the unfortunate event. Authorities will be investigating the incident and will likely face scrutiny for the use of firearms against the protesters.
