Blinkit, encouraged by Unacademy's CEO Gaurav Munjal, aims to introduce a 10-minute water tanker service in Bengaluru to tackle acute water scarcity. With groundwater depleted, tech professionals leaving, and restrictions imposed, the city's population of 1.40 crore faces a daily water demand challenge.

In
a bid to alleviate Bengaluru's escalating water scarcity, Blinkit,
a prominent quick-commerce platform, is gearing up to launch a revolutionary
10-minute water tanker service. This initiative comes on the heels of a
suggestion from Gaurav Munjal, the CEO of Unacademy, highlighting the pressing
need for swift action to address the city's water crisis.
Bengaluru,
formerly known as Bangalore, is grappling with a severe shortage of water
exacerbated by dwindling groundwater levels and erratic rainfall patterns. Many
bore wells have dried up, exacerbating the already dire situation. Munjal
emphasized the urgency of the matter in a message directed at Blinkit,
stressing the imperative to provide an on-demand water delivery service within
a remarkably short timeframe.
The
water scarcity has prompted an exodus of tech professionals from the city,
seeking temporary refuge elsewhere until the situation improves. Authorities
have imposed stringent measures to conserve water, including a ban on activities
such as vehicle washing, operation of fountains, and gardening, with violators
facing hefty fines of up to Rs 5,000.
According
to the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), the city's population
stands at approximately 1.40 crore, including a substantial floating
population. To meet the daily water demand, Bengaluru requires an estimated
1,450 million liters per day (MLD) from the Cauvery River, along with an
additional 700 MLD from groundwater sources.
In light of the escalating crisis, BWSSB has issued new directives mandating prior authorization from authorities before drilling bore wells, underscoring the gravity of the water scarcity situation. With traditional sources of water proving insufficient to meet the burgeoning demand, innovative solutions like Blinkit's proposed rapid water tanker service are becoming increasingly crucial.

residents. By leveraging technology and logistics expertise, Blinkit aims to
streamline the delivery process, ensuring timely access to essential water
supplies for the city's populace.
As
Bengaluru grapples with the daunting challenge of water scarcity, innovative
interventions such as Blinkit's proposed water tanker service offer a glimmer
of hope in navigating through this crisis. With collaborative efforts from both
public and private sectors, there remains optimism for finding sustainable
solutions to ensure the well-being of Bengaluru's residents amidst these
challenging times.
