Authorities in Florida have discovered a body in a retention pond near the location where the backpack of missing North Carolina teenager Giovanni Pelletier was found earlier this week. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Friday that the remains appear to belong to a man, but the identity has not yet been officially verified.

Pelletier, who vanished on August 1 while vacationing with his family in Englewood, had last been seen with cousins he had never met before the trip. His disappearance prompted a multi-agency search, with investigators focusing on the area near the southbound off-ramp of Interstate 75 and State Road 70, close to Bradenton.

The discovery comes amid conflicting accounts from those last with the 17-year-old. Retired FBI special agent Frank Brostrom noted that investigators will compare physical evidence with the statements already gathered. He emphasized that authorities are examining phone records, interviewing witnesses, and following new leads to piece together the events leading to Pelletier’s disappearance.

Pelletier’s father revealed that the family initially hesitated to let Giovanni spend time with the cousins but relented after seeing his enthusiasm. The cousins reportedly claimed that Giovanni was behaving erratically and even pulled a knife, but this account contrasts sharply with messages Giovanni sent asking for help shortly before vanishing.
