According to reports, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is debating whether to propose legislation that would make it illegal for future generations to buy cigarettes. According to government sources, this is a response to similar anti-smoking regulations passed in New Zealand.

These rules would prohibit the sale of tobacco to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009.

The British government is serious about reducing smoking rates and has set a goal of becoming a smoke-free country by the year 2030. Free vape kits, a voucher program for pregnant women, and the possible introduction of mandated cigarette pack inserts are just some of the initiatives that have already been implemented to help achieve this goal.

A government spokesperson confirmed these efforts but declined to comment further on The Guardian's report. These proposed policies are part of a broader consumer-focused initiative from Sunak's team in anticipation of the upcoming election next year.

Notably, in May, the United Kingdom announced plans to abolish a provision that permitted stores to give away free vape samples to minors as part of a crackdown on electronic cigarettes. Also, local authorities in England and Wales have advocated for a ban on the sale of disposable vapes by the year 2024, citing pollution and health issues.
