What Prompted The NCERT to Take The Decision?

Through a letter, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) urged the NCERT, to remove the mention of Khalistan from the Class 12 Political Science textbook. They also raised concerns about Sikhs being portrayed as 'separatists' in NCERT books. The NCERT then formed an expert committee that examined the complaint as well as recommended the removal of the mention of Khalistan from the Class 12 books.

What Has Changed Now?

The class 12 book titled 'Politics in India Since Independence' contains a reference to Khalistan. In an official statement, the NCERT has announced, "From the last sentence of the third paragraph under the subheading 'Punjab' the line'...but it could also be interpreted as a plea for a separate Sikh nation' is dropped. Just before this line, the given statement is rewritten as 'The Resolution was a plea for strengthening federalism in India'. In the same section (Sub-heading 'Punjab'), from the last sentence of the fourth paragraph, '... and the creation of Khalistan' is dropped".

Previously, the NCERT political science textbook stated, “The resolution was a plea for strengthening federalism. But it could also be interpreted as a plea for a separate Sikh nation", which has now been omitted.

Further, the textbook mentioned, ”A few years later, after the Akali government was dismissed in 1980… The more extreme elements started advocating for secession from India and the creation of ‘Khalistan’.” The mention of Khalistan in the last sentence was removed in the updated version.

The revised version of the textbook can now be accessed on the NCERT's official website. The decision by the NCERT is yet to receive an appalling public response by rational critics, foreseeably, both good and bad.
